Grow with Google provides small business owners and job seekers with access to free digital training, workshops and events

Today, Google launched Grow with Google, a new initiative aimed at helping Canadians access the best of Google’s training and tools to grow their skills, careers, and businesses. As part of this new initiative, Google announced $2 million in grants from Google.Org to bring digital skills training to individuals across the country. The grant will be used to bring two of Google’s leading digital skills training programs to Canada: Applied Digital Skills and the Professional IT Support Certificate.

Google is partnering with Canada Learning Code to provide Canadians with access to the Applied Digital Skills Program, a blended online and in-person curriculum that teaches digital skills through practical problem solving so learners can be competitive in an evolving job market. To make sure those lessons are available to all Canadians, the entire Digital Skills Training Program is offered in both French and English.

The Professional IT Support Certification Program takes beginner learners to job readiness in eight months with no experience required. Developed by Google and hosted on Coursera, the program has over 64 hours of video lessons, hands-on labs and interactive assessments for adults looking to reskill and start a new career in technology. Google has partnered with leading Canadian companies like RBC and Walmart Canada, and of course Google Canada to get graduates information into the hands of HR departments following course completion.

Google is also bringing workshops, in-person training, and one-on-one sessions to communities across Canada, in partnership with local community groups, businesses and leaders. Grow with Google events will cover topics suited to small business owners and entrepreneurs looking to scale their business and individuals interested in  growing their skills.

“Technology is the key to opportunity, which is why we are launching Grow with Google in Canada,” said Sabrina Geremia, Country Director, Google Canada. “By making our resources available to everyone online, by bringing hands-on training into communities across the country, and by partnering with organizations like Canada Learning Code who are devoted to expanding access to digital tools and training, we can help Canadians grow their skills, their opportunities, and their futures.”

“Digital skills are tools of empowerment,” says Melissa Sariffodeen, Chief Executive Officer at Canada Learning Code. “Our vision is a Canada in which all people have the knowledge and confidence to harness the power of technology to achieve economic and personal fulfillment. Our partnership with Grow with Google puts us one step closer to achieving that vision by allowing us to offer new content and scale our existing coding and digital literacy curriculum to more Canadians.”

The Meow-Available ‘Pet Parents, Oversharing’ Podcast Spotlights The Universal Truths Of Pet Parenting

Animals and Pets

Season One of the Series Explores the Comical, Honest and Heartwarming Confessions of Pet Parents Everywhere

Calling all puppy lovers and feline fanatics everywhere – an all-new podcast celebrating the ups, downs and often-sideways experiences of pet parenthood hits the digital airwaves today. The multi-episode podcast series, titled ‘Pet Parents, Oversharing,’ is produced by Freshpet® Inc., the makers of fresh, all-natural, food for pets. Hosts, comedians and best friends Kaity Reagle and Andrea Shapiro (host of “The Passport to Love” podcast) share their personal pet parenting confessions based on real-life, often-hilarious and sometimes-awkward moments with Floof Boi, the rescue Shih Tzu, and frisky feline duo Candy and Phoebe.

The podcast’s steam-of-consciousness banter often leaves the duo laughing in tears over their pet’s adorably ridiculous behavior. Episodes touch on a wide range of topics like puppy pageants, when it’s okay (and not okay) to refer to your four-legged family member as a “fur baby,” and how talented you really think your pet is. Season one will explore celebrity pets, the “cult” of pet parenthood and the weird, wonderful magic of naming a cat or dog; no topic is out of bounds as Reagle and Shapiro commiserate over having seen, heard and smelled it all.

“Pet parenthood is more than just having a dog or cat. It’s really about caring for them and celebrating them as members of the family. ‘Pet Parents, Oversharing’ brings those special everyday moments of being a pet parent to life in a hilarious, relatable way,” said Karina Delaine, Senior Content Marketing Manager at Freshpet. “By sharing these stories with listeners everywhere, Freshpet hopes to tighten bonds not only with humans and their pets, but also between pet parents, who can laugh – and commiserate over – their unique experiences.”

Given that half of Americans consider their dog their child, and 55 percent confess they’d be lost without their pet according to a recent national survey*, it’s only natural for pet parents to want to share their lessons learned and most cherished moments with other like-minded animal lovers.

In fact, close to three in five (58 percent) pet parents have conversations with their four-legged children, and significantly more women (68 percent) than men (41 percent) are likely to do so – a topic explored through ‘Pet Parents, Oversharing’ with original songs and stories of embarrassing one-liners your significant other wishes you never heard them say during passion-filled cuddle sessions.

Art

This week, Madhuri Murli has released a new music video; a mashup of Bollywood numbers namely Kailash Kher’s Teri Deewani and Meghna Mishra’s Nachdi Phira from the Aamir Khan film Secret Superstar. Madhuri has re-rendered the famous numbers, while the video has performances by her, along with members of her dance group Flute Theory.

A multi-faceted personality, Madhuri is a computer science engineer by degree, product marketing manager by profession at a tech company in Silicon Valley, singer, composer, writer, lyricist, choreographer, founder and creative director of the philanthropic platform Flute Theory — all rolled into one.

“It’s a three-girl video with lots of vigorous yet graceful dancing,” she informs. “The theme is semi-folk with a Bollywood twist.” Based in San Francisco, California, Madhuri considers the songs Teri Deewani and Nachdi Phira as her biggest inspirations as a singer and dancer. She believes both the songs, along with the gripping lyrics, convey deep passion as an artist.

She says, “The singers Kailash Kher and Meghna Mishra have done supreme justice to the masterpieces and my music video is a humble tribute to both songs.” Sounds interesting. Let’s see how well it manages to enthrall us.

For the record, this is Madhuri’s sixth music video and second mashup. She has released four original compositions in the past. One of her original compositions, Tera Khuda, has been ranking in Top 10 on MuSlate for over 16 weeks!

The round is led by GV, with participation from new investors Activant Capital and Tao Capital Partners. Existing investors Alexandria Venture Investments, Fall Line Capital, iSelect Fund, Lewis & Clark Ventures, Mercury Fund, Prelude Ventures, and S2G Ventures also participated.

“With its data-driven approach to crop improvement, Benson Hill has significant potential to impact the next wave of productivity gains across food and agriculture,” said Andy Wheeler, General Partner at GV. “The broad applicability of Benson Hill’s technology platform — combined with the executive team’s expertise in photosynthesis and genomic selection — creates new opportunities for farmers and the food production industry at-large.”

Benson Hill empowers organizations of any size across the agri-food value chain to benefit from the most advanced tools in seed innovation. Benson Hill’s CropOS™ computational platform and suite of breeding and genome editing tools leverage the natural genetic diversity of plants to improve the sustainability, nutrition and flavor profiles of crops with greater speed and precision than previously possible, dramatically reducing the costs and timelines to develop new products.

“Developing foods that are nourishing to our bodies, responsible to our planet and that taste great is not a trade-off, it’s an opportunity,” said Matthew Crisp, CEO and co-founder of Benson Hill Biosystems. “By combining biology with machine intelligence, our platform provides a novel approach to crop improvement. VoLTE Revenue Declined Nine Percent Quarter-over-Quarter in 2Q 2018, According to Dell’Oro Group

Technology, Telecom & Internet

Nokia, Huawei, and Ericsson Accounted for Over 70 percent of the VoLTE Market

According to a recently published report from Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, VoLTE revenue declined nine percent quarter-over-quarter in 2Q 2018. Nokia, Huawei, and Ericsson accounted for over 70 percent of the VoLTE market.

“With end-to-end solutions, Nokia, Huawei, and Ericsson grew quarter-over-quarter increasing their combined market share and leaving little room for other vendors,” stated David Bolan, Senior Analyst at Dell’Oro Group. “The VoLTE market would have increased quarter-over-quarter in 2Q 2018 if the US ban on ZTE had not been in effect. For 2018 the market is expected to be slightly below 2017, but will return to growth in 2019,” said Bolan.

The fundamentals of the VoLTE market are still positive and the penetration rate of VoLTE continues to grow. In mature LTE markets, some carriers are beginning to approach a 100 percent VoLTE subscription rate. Verizon, for example will reach this point when they turn off their CDMA network at the end of 2019. In low cost markets dominated by pre-paid customers with feature phones, VoLTE phones had been financially out of the reach of subscribers. But this is changing quickly, as Reliance Jio has demonstrated in India, with their introduction earlier this year of a low cost VoLTE feature-phone targeting the low cost pre-paid market.

Thousands of Canadians to tackle plastic pollution across the country

Governance, World

Around the world, people and companies throw away more than $100 billion worth of plastic packaging each year. Plastic waste and marine litter, including microplastics, pose a serious threat to the health of our ecosystems, wildlife and economies.

In fact, 8 million tonnes of plastic flow into our oceans every year—the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic being dumped into our oceans every minute. This reality is alarming.

Keeping all of our waters and shorelines clean of debris is important for a healthy environment for Canadians, today and tomorrow. This is why the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, travelled across Canada this summer to encourage Canadians to beat plastic pollution. Now she is launching the Community Cleanup, a call for Canadians to clean up plastics from their local shorelines, parks and neighbourhoods.

The Community Cleanup will start on September 8. Canadians are encouraged to connect with their local MPs to organize community plastic cleanups. Throughout the week, schools, businesses and citizens can organize their own cleanups. On September 15—International Coastal Cleanup Day and World Cleanup Day—there will be three major events, in VancouverToronto and Halifax, through the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, supported by the Government of Canada. People from around the world will come together to collect and document the trash on shorelines. You can join or lead a cleanup, on your own or through the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, anytime and anywhere in Canada. It is important to register with the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup to contribute to global and Canadian data by recording what you find.

Halifax will also be the location of this year’s G7 Environment, Energy and Oceans Ministers Meeting, on September 19 to 21. The Canada-led Ocean Plastics Charter was signed during the G7 leaders summit in Charlevoix, where international partners committed to removing debris from coasts and shorelines. Canada is determined to lead in this effort. And together, we can eliminate plastic waste and reduce marine litter in our own country and around the world.

“Our lakes, rivers, oceans and waterways are a big part of Canada’s natural legacy. And it’s important that we protect these spaces from the growing plastic-pollution problem. On September 8, I encourage Canadians across the country to do their part and take action in their communities,” says Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

Quick facts

  • Throughout 2018, Canada has served as president of the G7, a group of the world’s largest advanced economies.
  • About half of all the plastics ever manufactured were made since 2000. The global production of plastics has been faster than most man-made materials.
  • As of 2015, about 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste have been generated globally, with about 79 per cent of that amount ending up in landfills or the environment.
  • Only about 11 per cent of plastics are recycled in Canada. In 2010, Canada released into the oceans from land 8000 tonnes of plastic—the weight of 75 blue whales.
  • Over 90 per cent of seabirds have plastic in their stomachs.

100 Wild Elephants Will Be Relocated in One of the Largest Relocations in History From the 9th of September Until End of October 2018, From the Sango Wildlife Conservancy to the Rifa Safari Area Within Zimbabwe

Animals and Pets

With the kind permission and great support of the Government of Zimbabwe the relocation will take place in Zimbabwe. Under the direction of the Zimbabwean Parks & Wildlife Management Authority as a partner of Sango Wildlife Conservancy and Hemmersbach Rhino Force 100 wild elephants are being relocated.

Over two decades of nature conservation, the sustainable use of wildlife populations and intensive protection against poachers impressively demonstrates how successful nature conservation works in Zimbabwe on Sango Wildlife Conservancy.

“We simply have far too many elephants on Sango,” says Wilfried Pabst, owner of the 231.66 square mile Sango Wildlife Conservancy. “Thanks to the support of the Government of Zimbabwe and Hemmersbach Rhino Force, we are able to save 100 elephants from culling,” Pabst continues. The giants will be released as a donation into the Rifa Safari Area, more than 700 km away, as part of the “Initiative ReWild” from the Sango Wildlife Conservancy. The entire relocation is funded by Hemmersbach Rhino Force.

The new home of the elephants is the Rifa Safari Area, a 110.94 square mile park located in the Zambezi Valley in northern Zimbabwe operated by Hemmersbach Rhino Force, who’s CEO, Ralph Koczwara, welcomes the action as clear evidence of Zimbabwe’s success in nature conservation. “Hemmersbach Rhino Force is very happy to enable and fund the relocation of the 100 Elephants donated by Mr. Pabst. The relocation is only the first step in the collaboration with the Sango Wildlife Conservancy and Hemmersbach Rhino Force, which is planned to see plains game animals and ultimately rhinos being reintroduced where they once lived. The Save Valley Conservancy, of which Sango is the largest property, has had resounding success in protecting its highly threatened rhino population.
