Expedition finds evidence of first known whaling wreck in Canada’s High Arctic

Animals and Pets, Earth, World

Two Canadian researchers have found evidence of a Scottish whaling wreck in the High Arctic, thought to be the first discovery of its kind in the world. Michael Moloney and Mathew Ayre, post-doctoral fellows with the University of Calgary’s Arctic Institute of North America, made the find last week. The wreckage is from Nova Zembla, a whaling vessel that sank in a fjord near Baffin Bay in September 1902. The discovery is significant because the British fleet lost over 200 vessels and none have ever been found until now.

“Most Canadians are not aware of the important role that whaling played in opening up the Canadian Arctic,” says Ayre. “These sailors formed strong partnerships with the Inuit to learn how to navigate Arctic waters for close to 300 years.” The knowledge gained from each whaling trip became extremely helpful to subsequent voyages of Britain’s Royal Navy in their quest to explore the planet’s polar regions and discover the Northwest Passage.

“This is a previously unidentified archaeological site, and the first High Arctic whaling ship ever discovered,” says John Geiger, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. “It is a remarkable story of historical sleuthing supported by fieldwork and adds considerably to the historical record by shedding new light on that treacherous, once great industry.”

The team that made the discovery relied on drone footage and sonar imaging. Working off One Ocean Expedition’s Akademik Sergey Vavilov ship, they deployed a remote-operated underwater vehicle in a targeted five-square-kilometre search area, which they had narrowed in on through months of research. The pair still needs to further study the sonar imagery to examine some promising shapes, including what appears to be one of the anchors of the ship — straight lines and right angles are indicative of man-made materials. Moloney and Ayer plan on resuming their research next year and will work with local Inuit communities to learn more about the history of Nova Zembla.

“Grassroots underwater archeology on a budget takes time,” says Moloney. “This will be a multi-year project that helps Canadians learn more about our maritime history.”

The Search for Nova Zembla expedition was supported by the Expeditions Program of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, One Ocean Expeditions, Mountain Equipment Co-op, University of Calgary’s Arctic Institute of North America, Deep Trekker: Underwater Remote Operated Vehicles & Drones, and Lens Lenders.

Peerfit Closes $8 Million Funding Round, Adds Second Professional Sports Team Owner to Board

Peerfit, the market leader in connecting employers and carriers with flexible fitness experiences, announced today the closing of an $8 million funding round. Veteran Peerfit investors Ark Applications and PAR, Inc led the round.

This round includes not only a new investor, but another professional sports team owner to their group of investors. Wyc Grousbeck, the Boston Celtics’ owner, and his investment group, Causeway Media Partners, joined as a majority investor in the round. Grousbeck, whose investment firm focuses on sports technology companies, is making the jump into the wellness space with Peerfit. Grousbeck will also be joining the Peerfit Board of Directors as a result of this investment.

Peerfit continues to level up their existing group of investors who doubled down and invested again during the round including Lee Arnold, Colliers International Florida Executive Chairman and Jeff Vinik, owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL). This funding round will help fuel growth for the digital health company, whose ARR has already increased 5x since the start of 2018.

“We are thrilled to continue to raise funds from individuals and small groups of like-minded, successful business people, without going the more traditional VC fundraising route up to this point,” said Peerfit CEO, Ed Buckley. “The caliber of investors we continue to add to our table speaks to the quality of the product and service we are building at Peerfit, helping to redefine wellness for employees across the country.”

Peerfit has raised more than $23 million, grown their team to nearly 70 people, and continues to expand their Peerfit Studio Network across 46 states.

“At Causeway we look for companies with great leadership and impressive performance in growing markets,” said Boston Celtics’ owner, Wyc Grousbeck. “Peerfit has all of that and more. We are very glad to partner with Ed and his team, and legendary investor (and my good friend) Jeff Vinik on their exciting mission to completely redo and improve corporate and individual wellness.”

New iRobot® Roomba® i7+ Robot Vacuum Learns a Home’s Floor Plan and Empties Itself

Imagine a robot vacuum that not only remembers a home’s floor plan and cleans specific rooms by name – but also automatically empties itself. iRobot Corp. (NASDAQ: IRBT), the leader in consumer robots, today announced the Roomba® i7+ robot vacuum with Clean Base™ Automatic Dirt Disposal. The Roomba i7+ brings a new level of intelligence and automation to robotic vacuum cleaners with the ability to learn, map and adapt to a home’s floor plan. Introducing Imprint™ Smart Mapping, the Roomba i7+ remembers multiple floor plans and room names so users can customize cleaning jobs and direct the robot to clean specific rooms by voice1 or via the iRobot HOME App. When the Roomba i7+ robot vacuum is finished cleaning, it empties its own dust bin into the Clean Base™, which holds 30 bins of dirt, allowing customers to forget about vacuuming for weeks at a time.

Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here:

“With the ability to learn, adapt to and remember a home’s floor plan, and the introduction of automatic dirt disposal, the iRobot Roomba i7+ represents the most advanced robotic vacuum ever built,” said Colin Angle, chairman and CEO of iRobot. “This robot delivers on the original vision we had when we embarked on the journey to build a vacuuming robot almost 20 years ago.”

Knows your home’s floor plan. Understands your command.
Ushering in a new era of consumer robots, the Roomba i7+ allows customers to clean specific rooms in the home. Using Imprint™ Smart Mapping, the Roomba i7+ gets to know the home’s floor plan, giving customers total control to choose which rooms are cleaned and when. The robot learns every room – remembering up to 10 different floor plans – so users can carry their robot to another floor or a separate home, where the robot will recognize its location and clean as instructed. iRobot’s patented iAdapt® 3.0 Navigation with vSLAM® technology helps the Roomba i7+ seamlessly and efficiently navigate the home by keeping track of where it’s been and where it has yet to clean. The Roomba i7+ also adapts to changing home environments, so it always knows the best way to clean.

The Roomba i7+ works with Alexa™ enabled devices and the Google Assistant, and is the only robot vacuum that lets users clean specific rooms by name with a voice command1. For example, just say, “Alexa, ask Roomba to clean my kitchen,” or “Hey Google, clean the living room,” and the Roomba i7+ will efficiently find its way to the appropriate room to clean. Once finished, the robot will return to its base to charge and automatically empty its contents when paired with the Clean Base™ Automatic Dirt Disposal.

Empties on its own.
The iRobot Roomba® i7+ robot vacuum takes convenience to a whole new level with the first-of-its-kind Clean Base™ Automatic Dirt Disposal, which automatically empties the contents of the Roomba i7+ dust bin into the Clean Base. Doubling as the robot’s charging station, the Clean Base takes the dirty work out of vacuuming, storing debris in an enclosed bag, and trapping dirt and dust so it can’t escape into the air. When the bag is full, the user is notified via the iRobot HOME App. Then they simply pull it out of the Clean Base and replace with a new one. The bag can hold 30 bins of debris, so users don’t have to think about vacuuming for weeks at a time.

“iRobot is addressing a long-standing customer call by giving Roomba the ability to empty its own bin after each cleaning,” said Christian Cerda, COO of iRobot. “This enhances the customer experience by eliminating the dusty and dirty mess often associated with emptying vacuum canisters. With the ability to remember the home, clean specific rooms and empty itself when its finished, the Roomba i7+ with Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal quite literally frees customers from every aspect of vacuuming – from start to finish – for weeks at a time.”

Introducing the Roomba® e5 Robot Vacuum.
iRobot also introduced the Roomba® e5 robot vacuum. Starting at $449, customers can enjoy the luxury of automated cleaning at a more accessible price. The Roomba® e5 is packed with innovative technologies that work together for a clean home every day. It starts with the premium 3-Stage Cleaning System and Dual Multi-Surface Rubber Brushes. The specially designed Edge-Sweeping Brush focuses on dirt that accumulates around edges and corners. Smart navigation and Dirt Detect™ technology work together to cover a floor and focus on the areas that need it most. And because it’s Wi-Fi® connected, users can control and schedule cleanings on the Roomba e5 with the iRobot HOME App, or using their voice when paired with Alexa™ enabled devices or the Google Assistant.

Powerful performance, intelligent clean.
iRobot is the only leading robot vacuum brand with robots that have two Multi-Surface Rubber Brushes that work together to effectively clean both carpets and hard floors2. The Roomba i7+ and Roomba e5 robots will automatically adjust the height of the cleaning head so the two brushes can directly engage with the floor. One brush loosens and agitates dirt and the other moves in the opposite direction to extract and pull dirt in. And instead of bristles, which can bend and miss dirt, the flexible rubber brushes hug the floor to clean everything from small particles, like dust and dirt, to hair and large debris.

Featuring a low-profile design to clean under furniture and along toe kicks, the Roomba i7+ and Roomba e5 robots use a High-Efficiency Filter to capture 99 percent of pollen, mold, dust mites, and cat and dog allergens.

Leveraging Dirt Detect™ Technology – an iRobot patented feature – the Roomba i7+ and Roomba e5 robots are always looking for the places that need the most attention. Sensors in the robot recognize particularly dirty areas, such as sand near a doorway entrance, and prompt the robot to clean them more thoroughly. Once the Roomba i7+ robot is finished cleaning, users can view Clean Map™ reports in the iRobot HOME App to see where the robot cleaned and other details3.

Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the Unimoni Asia Cup has unveiled a new TVC as part of the ongoing #KnockThemOut campaign. The tournament scheduled to begin on 15th September will see Asian neighbours take on each other.

Star Sports’ latest TVC, designed for India v Pakistan clash scheduled on 19th September, is a tongue-in-cheek take on how both the teams view each other as their fiercest on-field rival. Historically, India vs Pakistan cricket matches across formats have created some great significant moments, making it one of the biggest sporting rivalries in the world. Staying true to it, and with a twist on an age-old ‘Neighbourhood Rivalry’, the film pits Omi Vaidya who plays the ‘Pange waala padosi’ and Naveen Kasturia who plays a newly moved in neighbour against each other. The two neighbours, a clever metaphor for the two teams, try to knockout each other during the course of the TVC making the Unimoni Asia Cup 2018 the quasi-battleground on which these two neighbours would want to settle scores and emerge triumphant.

The defending champions India will start off their campaign against the winner of the Asia Cup qualifier on 18th September before taking on their arch-rivals Pakistan on 19th September. The tournament guarantees a riveting battle for the Asian supremacy between these neighbours. Interestingly, given the format of the tournament, fans may witness possibly 3 India-Pakistan clashes in the tournament.

Fans can catch the Unimoni Asia Cup 2018 live on the Star Sports Network and Hotstar.

September is International Balloon Month

Earth, Society

#LiftUpSomebody with balloons but always use a weight and never release them

Sharing smiles and Smart Balloon Practices are the focus of this year’s #LiftUpSomebody campaign which is part of the International Balloon Month celebration.

The #LiftUpSomebody campaign inspires people around the world to “thank” someone special in their community by giving them balloons, and then share those moments of joy on social media. The campaign also encourages people to promote and follow the motto: “Don’t let go: Inflate. Weight. Enjoy.”

“Giving balloons to important people in our community such as firefighters, care givers and teachers, helps spread goodwill and demonstrates the positive power of balloons. This also provides a great opportunity to increase awareness of the proper ways to use and handle balloons, so they don’t wind up in places where they don’t belong,” said Lorna O’Hara, Executive Director of The Balloon Council which sponsors the #LiftUpSomebody campaign.

“Simple practices such as always weighting balloons, popping and disposing of them after the celebration, never inhaling helium, making sure children are always supervised when playing with balloons, and most importantly never releasing balloons, are just some of the tips we are encouraging people to share,” explained O’Hara.

The Balloon Council recently announced a revised stance on balloon releases to emphasize the fact that balloons should not be released. “Over the years, as the social and political climates have changed, our position has also evolved. This change in stance fully recognizes the need for everyone to be as ‘green’ as we possibly can be to protect our planet,” said Dan Flynn, Chairman of The Balloon Council. “Our new motto is “Don’t let go: Inflate. Weight. Enjoy.”

Photos using #LiftUpSomebody that are shared on Facebook and Instagram (@balloonsliftup) will automatically be entered into the photo contest. Winners will be featured on and announced at the FLOAT 2019 convention.

Schools and community youth groups are encouraged to take the “Faraday Pledge Card Challenge” and compete to see which organization fills out the most pledge cards. The pledge is part the national “Meet Faraday: Smart Balloon Practices” campaign that is travelling around the U.S. to educate communities about smart balloon practices.

The Balloon Council is a non-profit organization made up of responsible retailers, distributors, and manufacturers dedicated to educating others about the wonders of balloons and the proper handling of them.

Indie Author Donates 1000 Collector Edition Books to At-Risk Teens

Books and Publishing

Young adult author, S.L. Whyte, donated 1000 personally signed copies of Finding Tir Na Nog, the first book of her acclaimed fantasy series, Stelladaur, to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, several chapters of the Boys and Girls Club of America, and to low-income middle schools. BBBS provided hundreds of backpacks filled with supplies, including Whyte’s novel, to youth throughout greater Seattle and Tacoma during their annual Back-to-School Backpack event.

With new covers released earlier this year for each book of the Stelladaur series, Whyte wanted to get the Original Collector’s Edition copies to young readers who could not afford to purchase their own copy but would benefit from being introduced to the series. “Youth often feel powerless and depleted of inner strength, but Stelladaur invites readers to discover their own intuitiveness, self-awareness, and imagination by connecting with characters who must do the same to overcome insurmountable obstacles,” Whyte explains. “The story bridges the gap between fantasy and reality by shining light on human possibility.”

Innovative Educator and Founder of What the Experts Know, Astrid Witt, gave a shining review for the book: “In this truly remarkable book, S.L. Whyte has returned me to the dreams of my childhood, dreams that formal education had drummed out of me. This believably magical story provides profound truths on how to create the reality you yearn for and the dreams you dare to dream. Whether you are a teenager experiencing the awkwardness of first love, or an adult seeking to understand life itself, Finding Tir Na Nog will give life a whole new meaning.”

Finding Tir Na Nog (Stelladaur-Book 1), Fading Heart (Stelladaur-Book 2) and Fraction in Time (Stelladaur Book-3) can be purchased in several formats on Amazon and at B&N, and are available through Smashwords and Kobo. Book 4, Forever Changed, will be released late 2019. Media kit and book trailer available at

Young Adult Fantasy Author, S.L. Whyte, is the Founder and Curriculum Developer of The Stelladaur Academy, a nonprofit that provides educational enrichment resources for youth ages 13-17, as well as private- and public school classroom teachers, and for homeschool students. “At the Academy, we help youth explore imagination, intuitiveness, and character development as mediums of self-discovery and creative renewal,” said Whyte. “These are the building blocks of successful learning and joyful living.”

Fellowship makes it easier for students and researchers to get involved with voice technology

IIIT-Hyderabad has received the Alexa Graduate Fellowship for 2018-2019, making it the first Indian university among a list of 18 universities worldwide to receive this fellowship.

The Alexa Fellowship supports advanced conversational AI research by providing funding and mentorship to PhD and post-doctoral students. These students, under their faculty advisor’s leadership and with additional guidance from their Alexa AI mentor, will push the boundaries of the capabilities of spoken language systems.

Prof. C V Jawahar, who has been chosen as the Faculty Advisor, along with Alexa Graduate Fellow Praveen Krishnan, a senior graduate student of IIIT-H, will teach conversational AI to undergraduate and graduate students using the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) and Alexa Voice Services (AVS). Students will be introduced to the science behind voice technology via hands-on projects and labs.
