From Kenya to Canada: The Story of Kenya’s Only Ice Hockey Team

Sports

In Kenya, there is only one ice hockey team, and they have nobody to play against. Every Wednesday and Sunday, the Kenya Ice Lions take to the first-ever ice rink in East and Central Africa: a 1,400-square-metre rink at the Panari Sky Center Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. Located next to Nairobi National Park, is where the Ice Lions take to the rink and play the game they love.

In Canada, it is sometimes taken for granted that Canadians can always find someone to grab a stick, find some ice and play a game. Tim Hortons heard the story about the Kenya Ice Lions and decided to share our love of the game by bringing them to the birthplace of hockey.

“In Canada – and as a company – Hockey is part of our DNA,” says Jorge Zaidan, Head of Marketing, Tim Hortons Canada. “We are so inspired by the story of the Lions. Despite having no other teams to play against, the players on the Kenya Ice Lions’ passion for the game is unwavering. Their shared passion and love of the game knows no borders.”

Moved by their love for Canada’s favourite sport, Tim Hortons flew 12 members of the senior Ice Lions team to Canada to have the opportunity to finally play their first game ever against another team. After dressing in brand new CCM hockey equipment and personalized jerseys, they discovered they were in for an even bigger surprise: Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon were joining them on the ice as teammates.

“I was honoured to be able to join the Ice Lions as they played their first game against another team,” said Sidney Crosby, captain of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. “One of the things I love about hockey is how it’s able to reach so many people from so many countries around the world and bring them together.”

“While we played alongside the Ice Lions for their first game, we know it won’t be their last,” said Colorado Avalanche star, Nathan MacKinnon. “The team’s genuine passion and excitement for hockey is contagious – they were amazing teammates and it was great to play with them.”

“It is a dream to not only have the chance to play in Canada, but to play – for the first time – in full gear alongside two of the greatest players of the game,” says Benard Azegere, captain of the Kenya Ice Lions.” When we first started playing in Kenya, we didn’t even have full equipment, but now not only do we have that, we can say we’ve played a real game with some All-Star teammates.”

Tim Hortons made a donation to Kenya’s Youth Hockey League to help ensure that the Ice Lions’ passion for the sport lives on for the next generation. To see the full video of the Kenya Ice Lions hockey game with Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, please visit https://youtu.be/CqYfhY5gVl8.

STAR SPORTS’ NEW TVC ‘PANGE WAALA PADOSI MAGNIFIES THE SPIRITED RIVALRY BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN

Sports

Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the Unimoni Asia Cup has unveiled a new TVC as part of the ongoing #KnockThemOut campaign. The tournament scheduled to begin on 15th September will see Asian neighbours take on each other.

Star Sports’ latest TVC, designed for India v Pakistan clash scheduled on 19th September, is a tongue-in-cheek take on how both the teams view each other as their fiercest on-field rival. Historically, India vs Pakistan cricket matches across formats have created some great significant moments, making it one of the biggest sporting rivalries in the world. Staying true to it, and with a twist on an age-old ‘Neighbourhood Rivalry’, the film pits Omi Vaidya who plays the ‘Pange waala padosi’ and Naveen Kasturia who plays a newly moved in neighbour against each other. The two neighbours, a clever metaphor for the two teams, try to knockout each other during the course of the TVC making the Unimoni Asia Cup 2018 the quasi-battleground on which these two neighbours would want to settle scores and emerge triumphant.

The defending champions India will start off their campaign against the winner of the Asia Cup qualifier on 18th September before taking on their arch-rivals Pakistan on 19th September. The tournament guarantees a riveting battle for the Asian supremacy between these neighbours. Interestingly, given the format of the tournament, fans may witness possibly 3 India-Pakistan clashes in the tournament.

Fans can catch the Unimoni Asia Cup 2018 live on the Star Sports Network and Hotstar.

The Organizations Co-Host Community Event to Teach Children to Swim and Reinforce Water Safety

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Pool Safely campaign and the Michael Phelps Foundation today honored the 10th anniversary of the Michael Phelps Foundation and the 10 years since the passage of the Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Pool & Spa Safety Act with an event promoting water safety.

At today’s event, CPSC’s Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle and Michael Phelps delivered remarks about each organization’s decade milestone and the continued importance of water safety.

“As a result of the landmark VGB legislation, there have been zero drain entrapment-related deaths involving children in public pools and spas over the past decade,” said Acting Chairman Buerkle. “I’m honored to recognize this achievement, along with the achievements of the Michael Phelps Foundation and all our partners in the water safety community over the past 10 years. By working together, we will combat the public health crisis of fatal child drownings.”

“The progress our Foundation has made over the past decade is remarkable, but far too many children are drowning each year,” said Michael Phelps, President of the Michael Phelps Foundation. “We are proud to come together with Chairman Buerkle, Pool Safely, and other partner organizations to make a difference in the lives of children, helping them to learn how to have fun while being safer in and around the water.”

City of Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat, along with Melissa Sutton, President of the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, also gave remarks during the press conference lauding local and national water safety efforts while reinforcing the urgency of the issue.

Following the press conference, the organizations convened a water safety event that included a swimming lesson with children from the City of Peoria and a swim stroke clinic with participants in the Special Olympics of Arizona. Michael Phelps, joined by Cathy Bennett, Program Director for the Michael Phelps Foundation and the instructor who first taught Michael how to swim, and World Champion Swimmer and Michael Phelps Foundation Advisory Council Member Allison Schmitt, led in-water activities that highlighted the elements of the Foundation’s signature IM program.

After the in-water activities, participants joined more than 200 young swimmers from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix and Colorado River for a community water safety event featuring water safety activity stations. To kick off the community event, Michael Phelps led children in taking the Pool Safely Pledge, which asks children to affirm that they will: ask parents for swimming lessons, never swim alone, and always stay away from drains in pools and hot tubs. In addition to Pool Safely, Michael Phelps Foundation, and the City of Peoria, other water safety organizations at the community event included: CPR Party, Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona, JCMF Children’s Charities, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, ZAC Foundation, City of Peoria Fire-Medical Department and Peoria Firefighters Charities.

Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages one to four years old. An average of more than 350 children under the age of 15 die each year in drowning incidents. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to follow Pool Safely’s simple steps, which save lives around swimming pools and spas:

Install a four-sided fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate around all pools and spas.
Designate an adult Water Watcher to supervise children at all times around the water.
Learn how to swim, and teach children how to swim.
Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.
Teach children to stay away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.
Ensure every pool or spa has drain covers that comply with federal safety standards.
